Program for 2023-2024

We have an exciting program of guest speakers with both day and evening sessions!
All are welcome to join us for any of these sessions at no charge.

General Meetings

General meetings for September-December and April-May will take place in person,
unless otherwise determined by Ottawa Public Health.
Presentations will be from 1:00-2:00 P.M., followed by socializing and Executive meetings.
Meeting times and location: Tuesdays from 1:00-3:00 P.M., Bells Corners United Church,
3955 Old Richmond Road at Moodie Drive, unless otherwise specified.
General meetings for January-March will take place on Zoom.
Invitations to Zoom meetings will be sent a few days in advance of each meeting.

September 12, 1-3 P.M.	Play about Agnes Macphail, first woman Member of Parliament. Registration meeting. Dues $110 full member, $40 joint member, cash, cheque or e-transfer.
October 3, 1-3 P.M.	Dr Graham White is a Chemist with experience in exposure assessments at Health Canada. Today he will speak about the recent federal regulation of plastics in the environment, the nature and potential effects of microplastics, the nature of plastics and polymers and the reasons behind the regulations considering the amount of pollution and the abysmal record of recycling.
November 7, 1-3 P.M.	Allan MacArtney, Retired Terrorist Advisor for Transport Canada, will speak about “The Truth about Terrorism”, and tips on how to stay safe when traveling.
December 5, 12 noon	Holiday lunch, Amica Westboro Retirement Home, 391 Richmond Rd. Feel free to wear holiday hats and sweaters.
January 9, 1-2 P.M. on Zoom	Moyra Lauzière from Heart and Stroke Foundation will speak about symptoms for women’s heart attacks and strokes.
February 6, 1-2 P.M. on Zoom	Prof. Rod Phillips from Carleton University will speak about “Wine and the French Revolution.”
March 5, 1-2 P.M., on Zoom	Dr. Suzanne Evans will speak about her book, , “Mothers of Heroes, Mothers of Martyrs: World War I and the Politics of Grief”.
April 2, 1-3 P.M.	Discussion of the resolutions that will be presented to CFUW National.
May 7, 12 noon	Lunch at a restaurant to be determined. Donna Shields Poë will speak about the 125^th anniversary of the May Court. Annual General Meeting (AGM).

September 21, 7-8 P.M on Zoom	Dr. Gillian Leitch will speak about the Irish immigrants who came to Quebec.
October 12, 7-8 P.M. on Zoom	Carleton Professor, Dr Mary Jane Edwards, will speak about “The Napoleonic Wars, Slavery, and Emigration: How the Strickland Sisters, Particularly Catharine Parr Strickland Traill and Susanna Strickland Moodie, Wrote Current Issues into Their Literary Works.” (Note that this replaces the previously-scheduled talk by Victoria Rodriguez, RN, comparing the American vs. Canadian Health Care System.)
November 16, 7-8 P.M.	Suzanne Le, executive director of Multifaith Housing Initiative, will speak about affordable housing for low-income earners.
January 25, 7-8 P.M. on Zoom	Rosella Bjornson will discuss her life growing up on a Canadian farm followed by her life as the first woman Canadian commercial airline pilot.
February 15, 7-8 P.M. on Zoom	Ottawa Police Constable Martin Riopelle will speak about scams and fraud systems directed to seniors.
March 14, 7-8 P.M. on Zoom	Ryan McLellan from Edward Jones Financial Planners will discuss financial planning for seniors and tips on how to reduce taxes when dispersing their estates.
April 11, 7-8 P.M. on Zoom	Roberta Ostler Balmer will speak about advocacy and her experiences at the U.N.

General meetings for September- December and April-May will take place in person, unless otherwise determined by Ottawa Public Health.
Luncheons may be held preceding meetings on Nov. 29, Apr. 4 and May 2, if Ottawa Public Health allows, and will be announced as the dates approach.

October 4 @ 1 P.M.	Mags Gaulden (Grandma’s Genes) will talk about the power of DNA.
November 1 @ 1 P.M.	Gerda Kraft from Faith Lutheran will speak about how their organization helps Ukrainian refugees.
November 29 @ 1 P.M.	Amica’s Grace Turner and Erin Courtney will lead us in Trivial Pursuit and/or You Be The Judge. Be sure to wear your holiday sweaters and hats.
December 6 @ 1 P.M.	Emma Kent will talk about the Girl Guides.
January 10 @ 1 P.M. on Zoom	Biologist Dr Brenna Frasier from the Nova Scotia Museum will speak about the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale.
February 7 @ 1 P.M. on Zoom	Dr. Magda Havas from Trent University worked for 50 years on environmental smog and acid rain. She is now focussing on the effects of electrosmog and 5G towers.
March 7 @ 1 P.M., on Zoom	Ottawa Shelter Movers will discuss how their organization gets volunteers to help women move out of abusive situations. The presentation is about 25 minutes. The Resolutions will follow the presentation.
April 4 @ 1 P.M.	Ottawa Citizen Newspaper’s Restaurant Critic Peter Hum will talk about “How the pandemic has changed restaurants and their critics.”
May 2 @ 1 P.M	Author Suzanne Evans will speak about her book, “The Taste of Longing,” which is about women who are in Singapore’s prison during WWII. Though starving they share their favorite recipes with one another. The AGM will follow the presentation.

Evening Speaker Series on Zoom

September 22 @ 7 pm on Zoom	Radio Announcer and Author Jim Hurcomb will discuss his book “Rockin’ on the Rideau: Ottawa’s Golden Age of Rock and Roll” in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
October 20 @ 7 pm on Zoom	Emma Kent will speak about the Emigration Program which brought more than100,000 home children from England to Canada to work on the farms. Many were abused and neglected.
January 19 @ 7 pm on Zoom	Tim Burrows from Tesla will discuss “Should your next car be electric?”
